Luciana Phillips is an illustrator and textiles artist from Bali, Indonesia, currently living in Providence, Rhode Island. Alongside her work for Danny Bundy, she has done freelance illustration for magazine articles, websites, and private homes. Since 2019 she has been attending the globally-renowned Rhode Island School of Design, where she is currently majoring in textiles, and (when she has the time) working remotely as a designer and general assistant to the owner at Balizen, her family’s fair trade homewares and gifts business. Coming from a household of art and design, she started drawing as soon as she could hold a pencil. In her early years she was always encouraged by her mother, a designer, and was greatly driven by her admiration for her older brother’s art. Having moved many times in her adolescence and coming from a spiritual Balinese Hindu background, Luciana draws inspiration for her work from transience, impermanence, transformation and memory, explored through spirit, mind, and most importantly, body. Specializing in watercolor illustration, this sentiment is translated through the natural and spontaneous process of watercolor, and when combined with a love for comics, animation and children’s books, she creates nostalgic, lively, warm and free-spirited painted scenes. Luciana’s greatest satisfaction from her freelance work is developing an understanding of and a connection with her clients, in order to most fully embody their characters and vision into the commission, and perhaps uncover images and feelings of the project that have not yet been explored. It is as much a relationship as it is a job. Four years ago Luciana was blessed with the opportunity to collaborate on a wonderful project: Danny Bundy and the Search for the Butterfly. Through consistent correspondence and mutual excitement, she and Gilbert Balderrama unearthed the sweet and adored character designs of the Danny Bundy world, and with brilliant storytelling, crafted the charming scenes that fill the book. We can hardly imagine what magic comes from the upcoming book, “Danny Bundy and the Mystery of Lake Bamboo!!
